Life isn’t a neatly paved path. No matter how meticulously you plan, how carefully you avoid the pitfalls, or how many times you rehearse scenarios in your head, life will never follow a smooth script. It will be chaotic, unpredictable, and often downright brutal. The truth is: the more you stay holed up in your head, paralysed by the fear of what might go wrong, the less you actually live. The more you're in your head, the more you doubt and all that wasted energy sucks your confidence bone dry.
We are here to experience life in its full spectrum—to ride the highs and lows, to savor moments of joy, and to feel the sting of heartbreak. Each experience, good or bad, is an opportunity to learn and grow. As Tiff from the podcast Roll with the Punches aptly put it, “The best way a boxer learns how to not get hit is to get hit several times.” This rings true for life. We’re all going to get hit, and it’s not the blows themselves that define us, but how we respond to them.
The idea of dodging pain and discomfort is a mirage. If you spend all your time avoiding the ‘yucky stuff,’ you’ll find yourself on the sidelines of your own life. The only way to truly live is to engage with the messiness, to let yourself feel the full range of human emotions, recalibrate when needed, seek support, and then, crucially, open your heart again.
Here's a reality check: making yourself believe that any part of your experience is wrong or unbearable only traps you in a cycle of fear. Circulating negative thoughts endlessly in your head won’t make things better. In fact, it will make you too scared to even try. Our hearts are our compass, guiding us towards experiences that make life vibrant and sometimes necessary for you to live out in this lifetime, for your own growth and wisdom collection.
Your heart beats for life and shows you where there’s more to live. You can’t simply lay down or hide away in the ring of life. You have to show up, make mistakes, and embrace the mess.
Living authentically means stepping off the conveyor belt of societal expectations and charting your own course. It’s about listening to your heart and daring to follow its whispers, even when it feels risky and terrifying. A life that adheres to the cookie-cutter mold of safety and predictability is not necessarily fulfilling or true to your soul’s calling. It’s an illusion designed to keep you numb and compliant.
If you feel disconnected from your heart’s desires, it might be because you’ve shut it down. You may have neglected to even ask yourself what you truly want. It's time for a radical return to your core self. You need to engage in a journey of rediscovery, to reconnect with what makes you unique and vibrant. It’s about making a conscious choice every day to live life on your terms.
I know from personal experience the pull between conventional expectations and the freedom of being true to oneself. For much of my life, I resisted the conventional path, choosing instead to embrace freedom and authenticity. But even when I fell into conventional thinking, I found myself stuck, frozen, and even depressed. It was only when I returned to being true to myself that I felt truly alive.
